A perfect 5-day New England fall road trip covers 1,030 miles (1,658 kilometres), takes 19 hours to drive, and begins and ends in Boston, Massachusetts, home to New England’s busiest international airport.
Set off north on US Route 1, turn right onto Squire Road in Revere, Massachusetts, then immediately left onto the Salem Turnpike. Keep going north as it becomes Western Avenue, then Highland Avenue, until you reach Salem, Massachusetts. Head north out of Salem on North Street/Margin Street, then turn left onto Gardner Street, left on Pulaski Street, and right on Andover Street in quick succession. When you reach the I-95, use the onramp to rejoin it heading north.
After 83 miles, use Exit 44 in Portland, Maine, to join I-295 at its origin and drive its 52-mile length, before merging back onto the I-95 North. In Bangor, Maine, use Exit 182A to briefly take the I-395 east before keeping right to join US Route 1A. Follow this to its conclusion in Ellsworth, Maine, then go south on Maine State Route 3 to reach Bar Harbor, Maine, and Acadia National Park, before following the same roads back to Bangor.
Rejoin I-95, this time going south, and follow it 110 miles to Exit 75. Briefly go south on US Route 202, then turn right onto Poland Spring Road/Maine State Route 122. At its conclusion, turn right onto Range Hill Road, left onto Cleve Tripp Road, right onto N Raymond Road, then left onto Maine State Route 11. When it concludes, go right to take US Route 302 to Conway, New Hampshire, in White Mountain National Forest.
After exploring the forest, return to Conway. Follow New Hampshire Route 112/Kancamagus Highway west to Lincoln, New Hampshire, then take I-93 north to Exit 21. Go west on US Route 2, through Montpelier, Vermont, to Waterbury, Vermont, home of the Ben & Jerry’s Factory. After taking a tour and sampling some goods, follow I-89 south. Take Exit 3 in North Royalton, Vermont, go right on Vermont Route 107, then merge onto Vermont Route 100.
Continue south past Gifford Woods State Park, then turn right onto US Route 4 and follow it to Rutland, Vermont. Take US Route 7 south through Green Mountain National Forest to Bennington, Vermont, then go west on Vermont Route 9. Shortly after entering New York, take New York State Route 22 south, then merge onto I-90 heading east and follow it for 96 miles to Exit 94 near Worcester, Massachusetts.
Turn right onto Massachusetts Route 146 and follow it south, even after it becomes Rhode Island Route 146, until it concludes in Providence, Rhode Island. Leave the city heading east on I-195, then take Exit 11 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Cross under the freeway and go north on Western Fall River Expressway/David Street, before merging onto Massachusetts Route 79. When the road veers right, keep left to join Massachusetts Route 24.
At Exit 20A, head east on US Route 44 and follow it to Plymouth, Massachusetts. When you’re done, take Massachusetts Route 3 north to Exit 43B, where you’ll rejoin the I-93 and follow it north back to Boston, Massachusetts, concluding your perfect 5-day New England fall road trip.
